The Artist Richard Drayton aka “Stylez”
I was born into a family of artisans, each gifted in their own right. Together, we have a wide collection of paintings as well as African and Caribbean handmade crafts including wood portrait carvings, village depictions (Of Trinidad), as well as hand made carpentry. My focus has always been primarily on paintings and carpentry with more of an emphasis on Renaissance, portraits of notable persons, Pawtraits (pet portraits), as well as landscapes. Mediums used include oils, pastels, acrylic and coloured pencil.
I started my journey as an artist at the tender age of ten months old. My father was a government architect. His office was at the house in his den where he worked on blue prints for multiple projects ranging from churches, schools, houses, and much more. At ten months old and the youngest of five children, my father would often double as babysitter while doing his job. He would always give me paper and crayons to keep me occupied so I did not disturb him. I drew and drew until I became better and better. I felt elated at age seven to be elected to draw Santa and the Reindeers at Christmas on the class board on a yearly basis. As I grew a little older to six years old I became fascinated with the artistic pictorials in the Bible which escalated my need to explore the world of art. I would sometimes the ask pastor at my church to borrow the Bible so I could practice drawing the pictures. Shortly after, I became curious as to who the artist or artists that did the depictions were. Soon, I began exploring the works of such artists like Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer. My art has even extended to cooking and I’m currently working on a cookbook for all cultures…… Stay tuned…
